Some ideas I decided to note-down for the Thursday session, including trying to cover the tasks that we set for ourselves, as a group last week; As shown in the image below;
Some ideas and notes I wrote down were;
- The BBC article 'A Forest of chimneys!'. - Written about a local man, who has documented and catalogued all Mills in West Yorkshire, Huddersfield, both past and present. A great read - and a great link to our initial space ideas towards abandoned historical spaces/building around huddersfield - that we could occupy.
What do I want to bring to the group? What are my initial ideas?
- It is a fact (when you do an engine search online), there is not a 'documented' 'Art Scene' - (that I could locate anyway), when searching for Huddersfield - Other than the Huddersfield Art Gallery, located in the Town Library. So this is one 'Hook' we could impact 'and jump on' straight away as a key search engine word. - Our idea, and initial group aim - Should be to completely change this; especially digitally, as soon as we can!
- Using 'Art Scene' as a key [Search Engine] word.
- Also, as-well as bringing illustrative classes forward - for example, 'How to draw' workshops.
- One collaborative 'town centre' idea I had was A 'Monthly Wall Mural' idea; a place for anybody to come in, and 'blow off some steam', completely accessible, a group collaboration that will be 'wiped clean' monthly, to allow for more, new, exciting and ever changing pieces of art to be created - from something as little as scribbling your name, to a full blown master piece - theirs no judgment from me - but this will be 'something' that the whole 'arts' community can be a part of - and to be a part of something can be as great and if not, more impactful, than the outcome itself. "Bringing people together".
- Skills sharing? - "To Prevent the loss of Human Craft".
Refine Ideas;
- Craft sharing.
- A safe place - open to everybody - to get away from the 'fast-paced' reality of technology.
- A place to shut down and de-stress - arts and crafts can have a huge impact on mental health.
- Something to be a part of.
- A Creative/Accessible and bright website - Web & mobile compatibility.
12/02/20 - We began our session, by having a short tutorial with our tutor - held by Andrew Taylor; The notes I managed to gain from this group discussion, (As shown in the image below) were as follows;
- WOVEN - in Kirklees; textiles museums?
- The 'Community area' and 'Art Mural' currently in Queens gate Market, by a Female Polish artist - may be somebody we would benefit by contacting!
- How we are currently 'Evaluating space potential' - we need to start approaching people!! - really good point!
- HOOT - Research; a company workshop group, great for a potential interview!
- 'Richard Bates'?
- Visible/usable - spaces - how could these be evolved?
- Is this theoretical? or a physical plan? - Currently our ideas are a 'concept' approach; but this is flexible. Any steps we take to make this 'real' - as a development idea - looks fantastic - when reflected on us as a group when we present.
- We should begin speaking to people, and test our ideas on 'real' people.
- Kirklees image archive, they have 140 years worth of photography - Give the local community something to talk about - reminiscing from historical pictures of the town.
- [Any-which-way] - Coffee Revolution - Andrew Taylor, himself - used to do something very similar to our current group idea - of mural art; RESEARCH THIS - an art community of craft !
- The idea that; 'Weave, Make & Draw' / ' WMD' - could also be a "pop-up" workshop/activity/group - that can then be located all over Huddersfield - rather than limiting ourselves to one sole address - REALLY GOOD IDEA.
The rest of the Afternoon session was a held by a Visiting Lecturer - This was a really interactive and incredibly beneficial workshop! Especially to me as a creator at university when presenting but also professionally! - Especially when being able to explain and talk about your practice in a short duration of time - an 'elevator pitch'. (Notes Shown above & Below): -
Communication, Your Business Proposition 12/02/20: -
- "The curse of knowledge" book - A good read for creators;
- When communicating something you know, becomes problematic.
An elevator pitch - has 6 key stages: -
- What is your product/service?
- Who is your customer?
- Who is behind the company?
- Key benefits?
- Who is your competition?
- How do we stand out/differ?
This is when - the duration of the session became a workshop - and we were able to reflect these questions on our current group project.
The Questions and answers, are all hand written in the image above; however - more refined and readable - the answers were as follows: -
Q1; We are an intergenerational 'pop-up' workshop for sharing creative skills.
Q2; People of all ages, seeking to share and learn new creative skills, with the desire to give-back to the local community.
O3; We are a collective of Creative Arts Post-Graduate Students from The University of Huddersfield - with a passion to sustain hands-on craft and community.
Q4; Our beneficiaries will have the opportunity to gain new skills, meet new people and be immersed in a creative environment - giving you the time and chance within such a fast paces society to focus on your own well-being.
Q5 & 6; We are a platform, free to exchange skills. Offering taught/crafty workshop - open to a the general public with a desire to share and be creative - We are open to any donation/ We will have a 'merchandise' shop available/ and we will sell what we create and make back to the community.
We were then given the final task of - going through each of our well thought out answers Q1-6, and solely collect the most valuable information - producing a 30 second ' group elevator pitch', for the final task of the day.
The outcome we were able to come up with, was as follows: -
"We are a pop-up skill exchanging platform, made by the community for the community - that is completely free to anyone interested in 'Art' to participate in".
Overall a really, really valuable workshop! Well worth attending!
Until next week!
